Art print of an original painting 'Major Mitchells amongst the Macrocarpa' by Helen Ansell.

'These cockatoos are mainly found in arid and semi-arid inland areas of Australia, though they are often seen regularly in other climates. They particularly favour conifers (Callitris spp.) sheoak (Allocasuarina spp.) and eucalypts. Pairs don’t tolerate nesting closely together; hence they require extensive woodlands. Numbers have declined as their habitat has been cleared.

This branch of cockatoos, Lophochroa leadbeateri, is fairly unique, with a monotypic genus.  However it can also be included in Cacatua, as long as corellas are also included in this grouping.

Major Sir Thomas Mitchell wrote glowingly about it; hence its common name, while leadbeateri commemorates the British naturalist, Benjamin Leadbeater.

Eucalyptus macrocarpa is found along a narrow near coastal band of southern Western Australia. Its northern reaches intersect the normal range of Major Mitchell’s.' - Helen Ansell
